When to move subtitles to the top

Sometimes the bottom of the frame is already busy — hardcoded foreign-language captions, a karaoke or music line, a news ticker, or signage the subtitles would cover. Moving the subtitle track to the top keeps both readable. This page pre-sets the position to top-center; you can still pick any of the nine positions on the grid before downloading.

The position is written using each format's own mechanism: the {\an8} alignment tag for Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass / .ssa) and a line/position cue setting for WebVTT (.vtt).

One caveat worth knowing: subtitle position only shows up in players that honour it — VLC, mpv, and MPC-HC do. Plain SRT has no standard position field, and many TVs, phones, and streaming apps ignore positioning entirely and show subtitles at the bottom regardless. For the widest support, export ASS/SSA or VTT and test in your target player.

FAQ

How do I move subtitles to the top?

Drop your subtitle file in — this page is pre-set to top-center alignment. It writes the position into the file (an {\an8} tag for ASS/SSA, a line setting for VTT) and gives you a repositioned copy to download. You can choose any other position on the grid first if you prefer.

Why are my subtitles still at the bottom after repositioning?

Your player probably ignores subtitle positioning. VLC, mpv, and MPC-HC respect it; many TVs, phones, and streaming apps do not, and plain SRT has no standard position field at all. Use an ASS/SSA or VTT file and a player that supports positioning.

Does this work with SRT files?

SRT has no official way to store a position, so for reliable top placement convert to ASS or VTT (which this tool can output) — those carry the position, and capable players will honour it.

Will moving the position change the text or timing?

No. Only the on-screen position is set. The words, line breaks, and timings stay exactly as they were.
