Why subtitles go out of sync
Usually the subtitle file was made for a slightly different release of the same video: one with a longer intro, extra studio logos, or a different start point. The whole file is off by a fixed amount, so the fix is to slide every cue by that amount. Use a positive offset when the text appears before it is spoken, and a negative offset when it lags behind.
If the subtitles start in sync but drift further off as the video plays, a constant shift won't help. That points to a framerate problem, and the Framerate tool handles it.

My subtitles are a few seconds off. How much should I shift?
Find a line you can hear clearly and note how many seconds early or late it shows. Enter that number as your offset. If the text appears before it is spoken, use a positive value to push it later. If it lags behind, use a negative value. The ±0.1s and ±0.5s buttons let you fine-tune while you watch.
Does shifting change the number of subtitles or the text?
No. Shifting only adds or subtracts time from every cue's start and end. The text, line breaks, and cue order stay the same, and the file is saved back in its original SRT or VTT format.
The subtitles drift more and more as the video plays. Will shifting fix that?
No. A constant shift only fixes subtitles that are off by the same amount the whole way through. If the gap grows over time, it is usually a framerate mismatch. Use the Framerate tool instead, which scales the timing rather than moving it.
